When I was little my mother had always told me about the short story ‘Sealskin, Soulskin’ from the influential book ‘Women Who Run with the Wolves’ by Clarissa Estés. While I had adored her admiration for the story when I was young, it never really resonated with me until I picked up her original copy of the book and read the story alongside her annotations in the beginning of 2023. Through the timeless wisdom contained within its pages, ‘Sealskin Soulskin’ depicts women’s innate need to create, not only for the benefit of their own soul but for the collective consciousness of humanity.

Embracing the depths of feminine creativity
This story is one of my all-time favorites because it captures the essence of feminine creativity, womanly intuition and sense of self by exploring the transformational journey of the protagonist, who through her journey, discovers a profound connection to her soul(skin). Today, we as women often face numerous pressures and politically charged agendas that can disconnect us from our true essence, our intrinsic demand to produce. By actively engaging in creative pursuits that embody traditional femininity, we tap into this timeless wisdom passed down through generations, reconnecting with our “Soulskins” and allowing our inner selves to express and be heard.

The healing power of creation
The act of creating something, whether it be through painting, fashion, homemaking, dancing or any other form of art or craft, can be a profound source of solace, liberation and catharsis. It’s amazing to think that by translating our innermost thoughts and feelings into tangible creations, we are able to go through a process of self-discovery and healing. This creative process can transform mundane tasks, such as cooking a meal for our family, into a way to find resolution and wholeness. Every act of creation is a deeply personal and introspective journey that allows us to reclaim our power and rewrite our own narratives. Basically what I’m saying is that we’re pretty f*cking awesome and we don’t even know it.

Nurturing intuition and instinct
Ooh baby do I love the topic of a woman’s intuition. My intuition has not once failed me, and I’m sure you feel the same. As women, we possess a profound connection to our inner voice, an invaluable compass that guides our every move and creative endeavor. Back to “Sealskin, Soulskin,” the main character’s intuition becomes a guiding force as she embarks on her creative journey, leading her toward her true purpose. Just as the story says, listening to our intuition is extremely important, as this inner voice empowers us to continue navigating life’s complexities with wisdom, authenticity and resilience. Intuition is so important that it’s often referred to as a “sixth sense”, enabling women to tap into a deeper knowing beyond rational thought or external influence. So take this as a sign, and listen to your gut!

Women are sensitive, but not in the way you’re thinking
Okay I know what you might be thinking, it’s sexist to say that women are sensitive… But we are! It’s a fact that women possess heightened emotional and energetic sensitivity. It’s the reason why we’re biologically called to create and care for the most precious gift of all: life!
True, sensitivity gets a bad wrap, but intuition acts as our compass that helps us navigate these sensitivities, guiding us towards nurturing environments and experiences that promote emotional well-being. Not only can we create nurturing spaces, we can feel it when they’re not. Intuition enables women to discern the energy of spaces, situations and people, helping us make the right choices that protect our own emotional health as well as for others. So, the next time someone calls you sensitive, don’t get all RBG on them. Take it as a compliment.

In my own journey of discovering traditional femininity, the importance of women embracing their innate need to create becomes abundantly clear. In a world that often undervalues traditional femininity (or soft-girl vibes), embracing softness, creativity and listening to intuition are acts of empowerment for women. By honoring our innate creative instincts and trusting our God-given inner wisdom, we claim authenticity, forge our own paths and contribute to a world that celebrates the power and beauty of traditional femininity.
This hit home to me as a now twenty-three-year-old woman more than I ever thought it would. Just like many other women, I’ve always had this deep drive to create. Whether it be through angsty teenage diary entries, piano melodies learned by ear, fake brand mock-ups on an iPad, messy Spanish recipes in the kitchen or a newly created blog. Unbeknownst to me, creating has been woven through the fabric of my entire life.
Then came Capital Lane Co: My Soulskin.
My hope for you, dear reader, is that you find this as inspiration to discover (or rediscover) your own Soulskin; the vehicle that allows you to claim your inner creator. As experiences and relationships ebb and flow, your innate desire to create must be explored and sought after, daily. It’s what keeps us grounded.
